About us

Writing creatively, perhaps more than other creative endeavours, is carried out with other people, often specific people, in mind.

This makes the work of being a writer more significant than merely creating content or products. It is why, guided by the African philosophy of ubuntu, we see writing as a means of relating with others and pursuing harmony in and through these relations based on the recognition of shared humanness.

When carried out through a production and publication process that affirms and humanises everyone involved, writing can expand our shared humanness.

In pursuit of a production and publication process that is affirming and humanising of everyone involved—writers, readers and everyone in between—we are building a vibrant, democratic, equitable and self-sustaining community around the work of African writers.

We envision a community where our writers have the support and resources needed—obtained through equitable means—to produce creative, high-quality work that readers find interesting, engaging and readily available.

In our community, the risks, rewards and value created are shared equitably among those involved.

We’ve started in South Africa but are Pan-African in outlook.
